As fall approaches, there are many more activities to do outside or inside! This can be the perfect time to think outside the box and find engaging activities to do with the elderly.
Whether you are a caretaker for someone in your family, an employee at a care facility, or just a kind neighbor or friend, here are a list of activities you can do this fall!
Take a train ride
An easy and engaging activity for anyone is a train ride! Some companies like the Heber Valley Railroad even host other events on their rides. It’s a perfect opportunity for them to enjoy breathtaking views while doing something outside of their normal routine.
Set up treats for Trick-or-treaters
One simple way to get involved in Halloween, especially for home-bound individuals is to still set up treats for the kids that come by. This could help someone feel like they are still engaging with their community. Whether their own grandkids stop by, or the kids in the neighborhood, it’s one simple opportunity to be connected to others.
Host a cooking competition
If you work within the community or host more events, something like a chili cook-off or apple pie competition will give others the opportunity to share their talents with the community. People love a little friendly competition and the opportunity to share in traditions.
Make Pumpkin Art
If the elderly person in your care has mobility issues, you can get creative with traditional holiday crafts. Instead of carving a pumpkin, which may be difficult with all the tools involved, consider painting the pumpkins instead. You could use bigger brushes or even let them finger paint with the pumpkins. This way, you can still uphold the same traditions while modifying them to suit their abilities.
